*spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, but it’s been a month and a half*
We might have some fun in store later this summer with Ant-man and the Wasp. But the thing is, the wait between Infinity War and Avengers 4 is going to be long and unbearable.
Just a month or so before Avengers 4 comes out, we’re getting Captain Marvel. And while the film will serve as the appetizer for the main course, what’s great about Captain Marvel is we finally get an epic Marvel superhero story with a female lead.
I’ve been looking forward to it since it was announced with the rest of the Phase 3 films in fall 2014. I find myself drawn to female superheroes. DC has given us two superb heroines with Wonder Woman and Supergirl. But as you know, I am more of a Marvel fan.
Marvel already has a wonderful array of wonderful female characters. But none of them have been the lead character in a film. There is recent news that a Black Widow movie is finally in in the works. But more on the immediate horizon, there’s Captain Marvel.
The more I hear about Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, the more I like her.
(Of course I’ve heard nasty things about what she’s been doing in the comics lately, but let’s hope Kevin Feige doesn’t go that route).

There are tantalizing photos from the set.
Then with Infinity War, the Avengers were defeated, and half the population of the universe (with many beloved characters) has vanished. Thanos has possession of all six infinity stones, and he has mastery over space and time. The film ends with tragedy and hopelessness for the heroes.
And then the post-credit scene. Nick Fury grabs a secret device and triggers it just as he disintegrates. The device reads that the message is sent, and a peculiar logo appears.
Things just got real.
Believe me, if it wasn’t for that post-credit scene, Infinity War would have ruined me.
On that note, I think when she left that device with Nick Fury, she told him to only use it to contact her in dire need. When Nick pressed it he knew that the Avengers were in trouble and there was a lot of cosmic weirdness happening. And let me just add, this must be one of Nick Fury’s best-kept secrets.
Avengers aside, Captain Marvel is going to be a game-changer for the MCU.
Wonder Woman was the ultimate girl power chick flick. Captain Marvel might be something completely different. There are no Amazons to back up the protagonist (but Black Panther already gave us the Dora Millaje so it’s all good). Carol Danvers might be doing this on her own. For another thing, there will be a lot of space aliens.
The movie will be set in the 1990s. Will we have any throwbacks to the culture back then? The Lion King? Spice Girls? Boom-box stereos? Saved by the Bell? Britney Spears? (just kidding)
If Carol Danvers is a mature adult in the 90s, that means she was a kid in the 70s and a teenager in the 80s. So she’s practically the same generation as Star-lord and Doctor Strange. Good grief now there’s three of them.
The good news is she probably likes Star Wars. But the bad news is she left Earth before she could get her hands on Harry Potter.
I know I could research the comics or Wikipedia if I wanted to, but I want to be surprised.
There will also be a few throwbacks for Marvel fans, including some more backstory for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 villain Ronan the Accuser and his servant Korath. On earth we will be getting involvement from Nick Fury and Phil Coulson. I’m beside myself over Coulson. I haven’t seen Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but Coulson is still a character that is near and dear to my heart (aka I’ve written a ton of fanfiction about him). It’ll be interesting to see how he is involved with the S.H.I.E.L.D. coverup.
Some of the other Marvel heroes we’ve met, like Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange, have very impressive powers. But from what I hear about Captain Marvel, her powers could leave every other superhero in the dust.
I have so many questions about this character. Who is she meeting up with in space? Is she leaving anyone behind on Earth? How will she get along with our other favorite Marvel heroes?
And once Carol’s origins are established, I wonder what the explanation will be for her being lost in space for 25 years. Where will we find her when Avengers 4 opens? I want Captain Marvel to crash in front of Thanos’ bungalow and start yelling at him.
On a more serious note, Thanos destroying Xandar was referenced in Infinity War but not discussed in detail. Captain Marvel might be checking up on that when the Snap happens.
The directors of this film, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, also directed a movie I saw last year, It’s Kind of a Funny Story. It’s a good movie, I recommend you check it out but don’t show it to your young children. It’s a comedy that deals with some very serious and close-to-home issues for me. In any case, it’s a good endorsement for the creative team for Captain Marvel.
I am looking forward to meeting Captain Marvel because she will be a source of much-needed hope for the Avengers. She will use her abilities to help them fight back against Thanos. I am waiting with bated breath for a trailer, a teaser, anything. (There is a rumor that we could get a trailer as early as next week). I desperately want her to be my new favorite superhero.
And on another note, I want to cosplay Captain Marvel. Because it is very important to me that I get to save the universe.
